Life is complex. For me, it's important to dig behind the soundbites into the big issues (as in this one on congressional priorities with @RepMcEachin for @ProgressIndex; full story at http://bit.ly/2B9l1DY) [photo by Scott Yates] ...

I’m Sarah Vogelsong, an environment and energy journalist based in Richmond, Va. I currently report for The Virginia Mercury, a state policy-focused online news site that’s part of the States Newsroom network. (For more on States Newsroom, see this December 2021 story from The Washington Post.) My work at the Mercury has been honored by the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Virginia Press Association, and I was one of two state-level reporters selected to participate in the 2020 cohort of the Columbia Energy Journalism Initiative.

Previously, I’ve reported for Chesapeake Bay Journal, The (Petersburg, Va.) Progress-Index, The Caroline (Va.) Progress, Style Weekly, and many other publications. My work is regularly reprinted in other news outlets in the state and region.

I came to journalism from publishing, where I did editorial and production work for nearly a decade with textbooks, nonfiction and scholarly and current events periodicals. Clients included Oxford University Press, Princeton University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Taylor & Francis Publishers, and the Institute of Modern Russia, as well as individual scholars.
